Ask God

A common question I hear is “how could God?”

I’ve asked it more times than I’d like to admit in my own life.

When you really grow in understanding who God is and who you are, however, that question remains just with a significantly different emphasis.

We often approach God with a sense of self-entitlement. We don’t think we deserve the suffering we experience, as if it isn’t our own sin that has created the broken world that we are living in. We think somehow our wrongs should be disregarded and spared while knowing in our souls we don’t want sin to be justified, because then there would be no justice for the brokenness we experience at the hands of others.

We feel that all the good in our lives is appropriate. We lie to ourselves about our own depravity. We twist our perception of reality to fit our own narratives of our deservingness.

The deeper into relationship with God you grow the more you become humbled. I don’t mean just quiet-thanks-humility, I mean on-the-floor, tears-flowing humility. Suddenly the things in your life you took for granted become crystal clear examples of God’s incredible goodness.

Your health.

Your friendships.

Your car.

Your home.

Your food.

Your entertainment.

Your dreams.

Your comforts.

Your education.

Your experiences.

The list is unending, but the amount of things in your life that are undeserved gifts should have you on your knees. God’s goodness is not something to demand.

How foolish are we to forget how good our lives are.

How foolish are we to forget how good our God is.
