Politics and Faith
Stop equating Christianity to a political party. Both parties are created by humans. Both parties are run by sinful humans.
I am not writing this post to jump into political debate. I feel strongly that I do not want something I post on the internet to block the potential for conversation with a real person. I think that fueling divide among people is severely harmful - not disagreeing on policies, but on sharing those opinions in a manner that isolates into a “them” versus “us” mindset.
This doesn’t mean I don’t care what is happening in politics. But the day that my political party is more well known than my faith, I have failed. I want to live what I believe, not virtue signal it.
Over the past several months, my personal social media has become drenched in political opinions from friends with similar opinions and opposing ones. Some are heavily emotion driven, some are clearly written with great thought. In examples of both, however, I have encountered Christians on either side who have at times made the claim that “you aren’t even a Christian if you don’t agree with __________”.
That is a blatant lie.
Being a Christian means that you believe Jesus was God’s only Son, who came to earth, lived a perfect life, died and rose to life again, conquering death and sin because He loved us.
Being a Christian means accepting that a relationship with Him is the only way to be saved.
Being a Christian is not a political party.
It is fine for you to have political views based on your biblical beliefs - in fact, you should - but when we condemn other Christians for not sharing the same ones as us, we are telling others that Christ’s sacrifice wasn’t truly for all.
No one changes their political view based off of what you share on social media. No one. They do, however, change their perspective of Christ based on how Christians conduct themselves.
Are you living in a way that is more known for your faith or your political party?
